Eastern Pulaski School’s Winamac Warriors Junior and Senior High cross-country teams attended the Caston Schools’ Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, September 5, 2015 in Fulton, Indiana.
The Warriors compete in this early season invitational every year, giving the team and its individual members a chance to evaluate their skills and plan a course of action for improvement throughout the rest of the season. This year’s participation by Warriors in the sport of running cross-country increased enough that one school bus was not enough to transport all the students.
According to the Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation’s Facebook page, the High School men’s team took first place at the Caston Invitational with Michael Beckner placing nineteenth, Braden Tankersley in twelfth place, Jon VonTobel in eleventh place, Zen Zupin in fourth place, and Kyle Collins placing first. The women’s team results are pending announcement, as well as the Junior High scores. However, on post stated two members of the women’s team were individual champions.
Cross Country running is an individual sport as well as a team sport that builds stamina and strength by offering lengthy courses over multiple type of terrain. Runners train year round in all types of weather to keep in shape.
Families and friends attend these meets to cheer and encourage their runners. Many times, running cross-country is a family activity. However, team members, their friends and family, and even other coaches give words of encouragement to all runners. Just crossing the finish line is a great accomplishment.
The Warriors have many more meets scheduled for the year, including the New Prairie Invitational and the Culver Military Academy Invitational. The season ends in Mid-October with another trip to Culver Military Academy, followed closely with the Semi-State meet at New Prairie. The State competition is announced later.
